4th Grade
Spanish will take place once a week in you child's regular classroom. Building on vocabulary, simple commands and interrogatives plus the grammar concepts that were introduced last year,  we will begin to put it all together in dialogues, skits and written form. Students will continue to work with the pronouns, verb conjugation, adjective agreement and definite - indefinite articles. And they will review previous material as they are introduced to the new. Students will continue to develop their listening and speaking skills as well as reading and writing skills. In 4th grade students will continue to write daily (date and weather)as well as take notes. Regular quizzes and projects will evaluate their progress.

ATTENTION PARENTS! Your child has Spanish once a week, therefore homework will be assigned periodically. These assignments will cover material that we are working on in class and serve to reinforce the vocabulary and/or grammar. Watch for spanish homework in your child's homework folder and please make sure it is returned.

Classroom Rules and Procedures

This year I will be visiting your child in their regular classroom to instruct them in Spanish. In order to make our classroom safe and fun, I will ask the students to follow these rules:

1. Be prepared and listen to the directions the first time they are given.

2. Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.

3. Ask for permission to leave your seat or the room.

4. Keep your hands, feet and objects to your self.

5. Be polite and kind. Show respect for everyone and everything in the room.

I will follow the consequences that are used by your child's classroom teacher and I will call you if I have any concerns.

The students will be rewarded for following the rules with praise from the teacher, a positive report to their regular teacher, a note or a call home or a "Sit with a Buddy" pass.

My goal is to create the best possible learning environment for your child and all the students in their classroom. Each grade will have its own routine that we will follow each visit - a "hola" song, journal writing, etc. Students will be asked to stay in their seat unless they have permission to do otherwise. One boy and one girl may be excused at a time to use the bathroom, drinks of water should be done before or after class and pencils may be sharpened during the first few minutes of the class. A special pass will be given if the child needs to go to the nurse.

We do a variety of activities during the period, therefore the students need to look and listen for the "Dame 5" (Give me 5) command. The alerts the students that we are going to change activities and they will receive new directions.

Student Evaluation and Assessment

There are many ways to assess learning of a foreign language. For grades Kindergarten to 4th Grade we use the system of: "O" for Outstanding "S" for Satisfactory "N" for Needs Improvement "U" for Unsatisfactory For the Spanish program we use the traditional quiz as well as the rubric which is a scoring tool that lists specific criteria student's must meet in order to achieve a certain grade. When we evaluate a student we look for listening proficiency, speaking proficiency and classroom participation. All of these are very important!
