5th Grade Mathematics:

Welcome to 5th grade Mathematics! I am excited to be teaching your son/daughter Mathematics this year. Lucky for me I had all of the 4th graders last year during lunch/recess two days a week in 2011-2012. It should be a great school year!

Students are asked to bring the following supplies to school for Mathematics class:

  • A binder (with notebook paper) or multi-subject notebook (notebook probably takes up less space).
  • Casio Scientific Calculator
  • Sharpened #2 pencils with erasers - I will not allow students to do their Math work in pen in 2012-2013.
  • Student assignment pad (provided by the school)

Grading Policy:

  1. Tests are 50% of your grade. If you earn an 80 or below on a test, you will be allowed to fully write out corrections at lunch, before school or after school (based on my availability) on a separate sheet of paper to earn a better grade. Tests must be corrected within 3 days of the test being returned (except in extenuating circumstances). The test grade and corrections grade will be averaged. Tests will be announced in advance.
  2. Quizzes are 25% of your grade. Quizzes may be unannounced. Notebook checks may also be counted as a quiz grade. Students are expected to keep an organized notebook.
  3. Homework and participation are 25% of your grade.

Homework Policy:

All homework will be written on the classroom whiteboard and must be written in the assignment pad. Homework is also located each night on my classroom webpage found at www.brielle.k12.nj.us. Pull down the menu for “Grades 3-5” and click on “Mr. Labrecque”. Once on my webpage, click on “Classroom Calendar/Homework” on the menu to the left side of the screen.

Students that have missed a homework assignment are required to complete a “Homework Excuse Note”. This note must be signed by a parent informing them of the missed assignment and returned to school the next day. If the note is not returned, I will be calling parents personally to follow up or sending home a 2nd notice. Late homework assignments will be deducted 5 points per day.

Online Text:

Students have the ability to view our classroom text and practice workbook pages online. This may be helpful for parents wanting to view what we are learning at school as well as allow students to get their workbook pages in the event that the workbook is forgotten in school.

Last week, I sent home with each student their username and password in order to get access to the online text.

Absences:

I will put aside missed assignments when a student is absent. I would suggest that a student ask a classmate what classwork was done during the absence and then check my website to find out what the homework assignment was. I will then do my best to get the student caught up on concepts missed once he/she returns to class. The student will have the same number of days absent to make up the work missed.

If you have any questions or concerns during the year, you can reach me via e-mail (slabrecque@brielle.k12.nj.us) or call me at 732-528-6400 x 169.

Looking forward to a great year in 5th grade Mathematics! Let’s work together to make this a really exciting and productive year for your child. Please sign and return the bottom portion of this page while keeping the remainder of this handout for future reference.

Sincerely,

Mr. Labrecque
